Hi everyone,
I've just discovered this fabulous forum wanted to introduce myself. I've been suffering from panic attacks and panic disorder when driving on freeways for about 6 years now. I've done the wrong thing and avoided driving on freeways as much as possible but unfortunately I am now forced to drive on them more regularly to visit family. I have developed my own little techniques for dealing with my panic attacks but they do revolve around avoiding the "scary" situations (driving in the left lane, not overtaking etc) but I want to overcome my fear completely. My biggest fear when driving on the freeways is passing out. When I have the panic attacks I feel dizzy and light headed and worry about passing out. I tend to be a bit of an anxious person and have also recently started passing out when having blood taken. It scares me to know that my mind has the ability to cause me to pass out .... so I start worrying that this will also happen when driving.
Anyway I'd love to hear about other peoples experiences and suggestions. One day I want to have the guts to be able to drive in the fast lane and overtake cars and trucks without absolutely freaking out. Another worry is that my mum is starting to lose her vision and soon may not be able to drive anymore which would mean that I would be driving her everywhere. I haven't confided in my mum because she is a worrier by nature and I dont want to make my problem her problem. Luckily I have the support of a wonderful partner but he still doesn't quite "get it" because he doesn't experience similar attacks.
I hope to learn from you all and develop the strength to face my fears!
lith
