This moving series follows children with illnesses ranging from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) to anorexia, as they receive intensive, and often emotionally-draining, treatment at the Children's Unit of the Maudsley Hospital in London, where new approaches have been pioneered in the UK.

The first film follows two boys with OCD: Danny, eight, and Jack, 15. Danny's parents first realised something was seriously wrong when they found him sticking pencils down his throat and trying to gouge out his eyes. His teachers thought he was naughty, his doctor said Danny was mad and social workers blamed his parents. But they discovered that an imaginary monster in Danny's head was forcing him to harm himself. Meanwhile, Jack's life has become dominated by obsessive cleaning and ordering his possessions. He spends hours washing his hands, cleaning his room and checking his computer for viruses. As Danny and Jack undergo treatment with Dr Heyman's team, their parents are enlisted to help with the hard work involved in the progress towards recovery.
