driving on motorways

Hi there my name is gary and i'm 30 years of age and have a problem of having panic attacks while driving on motorways this has been in my life for the past 3 and a half years and is slowly destroying my life it is getting worse as i now have problems on A-roads and crossing over motorway bridges. my symptoms are that i get hot and sweaty and feel dizzy and my heart is beating and i just want to pass out is how i feel. I slow the car down to a near stop on a motorway and this is dangerous for me and other drivers so i avoid these roads.

i know how you feel, iam the same with driving in general, it sux. i get very anxious and feel sick. Try not to let it get u down

me too. It started being unconfertable but now it is even worse.

Gary, I have just returned from a 240 mile round trip taking my elderly partents to see a specialist. A new motorway opened up last week and my Dad wanted to go on the new road. I nearly passed out. I was on the motorway for about 10 minutes when the panic attack started. My head started getting dizzy, my heart was jumping around my chest, my hands were sweating so much that I couldn't grip the steering wheel properly, I couldn't hear what anyone was saying, both of them talking at the same time. I pulled the car over, pretending I heard my mobile phone ringing. I couldn't tell the folks what was happening or they would panic too. I pulled out again and although I wasn't much better, I got through it. I couldn't figure out what the problem was. Normally I get a panic attack when I am in a group of people, but there was nothing except motorway ahead of me.

We found the specialst surgery in a country village, got something to eat and then started for home again. I told Dad we weren't going home on the motorway because it's too fast for my liking. We were looking for the old road home and thinking I had found it, took a right turn, and guess what - we were back on the motorway again.! I started panicking as soon as we joined it and the sweat rolled off me. Remember, I am still trying to hide it from the folks. Dad is talking away about the fields, the traffic, and anything he can see. Mam in the back seat is calling out the TV viewing from the newspaper. But then, I got behind a large truck, and stayed there for quite some time and the panic attack subsided. The truck blocked my view of the open expanse of motorway and I think this why my problem started. I stayed well behind the truck until I recognised the area and then slowly overtook. :idea: This is what I am going to do in future - stay behind something that blocks my view of the vastness of the motorway. As long as I stay well back, it shouldn't be a problem for other road users.

Can you believe they are designing cars with sensors in the car seat that tell you to pull over cos your having a heart attack. lmao I thought It would be telling me to pull over every minute...I struggle to drive anyway much less waiting for a machine to tell me what my heart is doing!!!

It's what keeps me going colourgirl lol Laughter is another thing I found out that relieves anxiety. But the car thing is really true! I shan't be buying one anytime soon :)
