Necrophobia is defined as the fear of dying or as the fear of the dead.
It is a fear that most of us share, but don't even realize it. No matter who we are, we shelter some kind of fear of death. Those who have less of a fear are more likely to do things that others would be too scared to do. A film stuntman would be a person that might have less of a fear of death then someone else. A firefighter is also a good example of someone with a low case of necrophobia. Necrophobia can be the root cause of many other phobias. A person who is claustrophobic might actually be afraid of dying in an enclosed space. A person who is afraid of flying might be that way because they are scared of getting killed in a crash. Frued believed that necrophobia is a fear that is rooted in a person's need to reproduce. He pointed out that as we age, most people will find that they are less afraid of death then they were when they were younger. He reported that this change usually happened after the childbearing years. There are certain interesting characteristics that you can point out in people if they are more necrophobic then others. Everyone knows people that will refuse to go to funeral homes, or if they do, are too scared to approach the coffin. There are also people who refuse to buy a house if they find out that someone has died in the house at some point. Dr. Marcus Kulin, a film expert once wrote that he believed that people who were afraid to watch horror films displayed a high amount of necrophobia. He did not believe, though, that horror fans were unnecrophobic. He also pointed out that most horror films play on the different aspects of necrophobia. Fear caused by vampires, zombies, ghosts, and constructs (Frankenstein) were directed at our innate necrophobia. These creatures would become unrealistic symbols for death. Serial killer/slasher films were a humanizing of the personification of necrophobia. Most of us live out our lives with some form of necrophobia or another. It may be rooted in our need to reproduce. Also, though, it may be rooted in a fear of the unknown that will be made clearer to us after death. Most people will never be sure about the existence of the afterlife, until they join it.
